Start with the decision you need to make
Tracking should answer a commercial question. Examples include which YouTube description placement earns the most, whether a newsletter sponsorship deserves another send, or which product category should receive the next article.
If two placements would always receive the same future decision, one shared tracking link may be enough. If you might scale, edit or stop them separately, give each placement its own campaign identity.
Create a naming system before creating links
A consistent campaign name makes reporting understandable months later. Use a structure such as channel–content–offer–date: youtube-camera-review-tripod-jul-2026. Keep the public slug shorter while preserving the descriptive campaign name inside your workspace.
Do not remove the affiliate network’s destination parameters. The short link should redirect to the complete destination supplied by the merchant or network.
- Campaign name: descriptive and internal
- Short slug: concise and shareable
- Destination: complete affiliate URL
- Source note: where the link was published
Measure the full path
A practical funnel has four layers: the content impression, the link click, the merchant conversion and the commission. Most creators can measure the final three even when platform impression data is incomplete.
Keep click and commission windows aligned. A network may credit a purchase days after the click, so a campaign can appear weak if you judge it before its normal attribution window closes. Mark recent campaigns as provisional rather than forcing an early conclusion.
Reconcile network results
Choose a weekly or monthly review time. Export or read the network report, identify confirmed conversions and record the commission against the matching campaign. If exact sub-ID attribution is unavailable, document the rule used to assign the conversion instead of presenting an estimate as certainty.
Refunds, reversals and pending transactions should not be treated as final earnings. Keep a consistent policy: for example, record approved commission only, then update reversals during the next review.
Turn reporting into action
Rank campaigns by revenue and EPC, then add context: content age, traffic source, offer availability and sample size. High revenue with low EPC may need conversion work. High EPC with low traffic may deserve more distribution. Low revenue and low EPC is a candidate to improve or retire.
LinkYield is designed for this workflow: create a recognizable revenue link, count human visits, record confirmed commission and compare earnings per click in one place.
